Saturday 5th March - Local campaigner Rob Coleman led local residents in a ‘Clean for the Queen’ litter pick at the Warstone Lane Cemetery in the Jewellery Quarter.
Altogether, more than a million people have been out and about across the UK , clearing up the places where they live to help celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in April.
The ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign, backed by organisations including the Women’s Institute, the National Trust and the RSPB, as well as anti-litter charities such as Keep Britain Tidy, was the biggest community-led clean-up the country has ever seen.
Reflecting on the clean-up, Rob said: ‘Clean for The Queen is about everyone working together to give the country a big spring clean ahead of Her Majesty’s birthday and I was delighted to be able to lead a local clean up with local Conservatives and the Friends of the Warstone Lane and Key Hill Cemeteries in the Jewellery Quarter’.
‘I would further like to extend my thanks to the Friends of the Cemetery who have organised for the disposal/recycling of the waste. Together, we were able to clean over 14 sacks of litter and a considerable amount of bulky waste from the cemetery’
‘Whilst the cemetery is not an active burial plot, it remains of significant historical value and is popular with local historians, tourists and dog walkers. However, like many areas of Birmingham, litter and fly tipping is a persistent issue here, and for that reason, I would like to thank everyone who got involved with the campaign to rid this area of litter’
In addition to the litter pick, Rob has also been active reporting instances of fly-tipping in the Jewellery Quarter as well as in nearby Soho Ward where litter continues to blight communities.
