At today’s Full Council meeting Cllr Robert Alden asked the Cabinet Member for Social Inclusion, Community Safety and Equalities to host a Cross Party roundtable between the three-party Leaders, Business Improvement Districts, Night-time venues, specialists in safety advice, the Police, and any other relevant groups to help tackle this crime, including looking at how to get specialist mobile health professionals for venues.
Commenting on the request Cllr Alden said;
“This is a horrific crime, one which has had an increase in reporting in recent months and one that must be tackled, it is simply not right that so many women are left feeling so unsafe at night.”
Cllr Alden following up on the answer also covered the recent spate of disgusting homophobic attacks in the Gay Village and called on Cllr J Cotton to form a wider cross-party working group to work on a comprehensive nighttime safety plan to help keep all visitors to Birmingham City Centre safe and ensure Birmingham is a welcoming place.
Cllr Ian Ward in his response agreed with the Leader of the Opposition that work needed to be done to stamp out these terrible crimes and since the Cabinet Member wasn’t present at the meeting he would go away and ask the Cabinet Member to look at organising such a meeting.
