Councillor Ewan Mackey (Con, Sutton Roughley), PCSO Cindy Tierney, PCSO Owen Clive along with local residents recently held a community Speed watch campaign on Lindridge Road in Sutton Roughley Ward on Wednesday. Within minutes of setting up, they were recording a high volume of speeding traffic heading towards Whitehouse Common Road. Much of the traffic is using Lindridge Road as a rat run to avoid the A446 & Bassets Pole.
Those breaking the speed limit should keep an eye out for the postman as they will be hearing from the police and those who were “significantly over the speed limit” may be receiving a personal visit from a Police Constable.
“Lindridge Road is a residential road with a 30MPH speed limit and it is intolerable that drivers feel they can drive at whatever speed they like without a care for the residents whose lives they are putting at risk.”, Cllr Ewan Mackey said.
Ewan added “I am determined that we must educate drivers to respect our community, slow down, keep to the speed limits and drive carefully for the safety of our residents and in particular our children. We have recently added a vehicle activated speed sign with a LED display warning drivers of their actual speed and yesterday I also decided to have 30MPH roundels painted on Lindridge Road so drivers are in no doubt that Lindridge Road has a Speed Limit of 30MPH! ”
Local Resident Anthony Brownsett said “On behalf of all the residents in Lindridge Road, can I thank Cllr Ewan Mackey, Sutton PCSO’s, my wife, who spearheaded our campaign for the last 3 years and my fellow campaigners in their continuing efforts to remind drivers of the 30 mph speed limit in force. It is a narrow road and speeding motorists present extreme difficulty in getting safely off our drives. I urge drivers to be sensitive to the residents' safety and compliant with the law”
National evidence indicates that:
• At 40 mph there is a 31 per cent fatality rate
• At 30 mph there is a 7 per cent fatality rate
• At 20 mph there is a 1 per cent fatality rate
