Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Cllr Rob Sealey & local candidate Nigel Dawkins on "Lidl coming to Stirchley:"
Lidl, the cut price supermarket chain, has submitted a planning application to redevelop the Fitness First leisure site on the Pershore Road into a Lidl supermarket.
Although such a supermarket would be very popular in the area, it raises the question; why does Stirchley have to lose its only leisure facility in order to gain such a popular supermarket?
Your local Conservatives are asking the City Council’s Regeneration and Planning Department the important question; why such a popular supermarket chain cannot be persuaded to instead build on one of the already vacant/derelict sites around Stirchley?
Couldn't Lidl take over the vacant Tesco site instead?
It seems unlikely we are told. Tesco own the large site on the Pershore and are still planning to build their superstore there in 2017 with free parking for over 450 cars. However, Stirchley has already been blighted for far too long waiting for Tesco to redevelop that large part of Stirchley.
The council’s Regeneration and Planning Department should get tough with Tesco and tell them straight; give us a proper timetable for building work to begin or lose your planning permission.
Tesco, If you have no intention of coming to Stirchley, then sell the land to some company which does want to come.
Couldn't Lidl take over the vacant ArvinMeritor site?
The large ArvinMeritor site on Fordhouse Lane is still on the market.
On two occasions in the last 15 years, the supermarket giant ASDA has tried to purchase the land and on both occasions has been refused by our city’s Planners.
It is a great site with plenty of room for parking. It is possible to give it convenient and wide access to the Pershore Road via Mayfield Road.
If Lidl took over the site for a new store there would be extra benefits for Stirchley. Stirchley would get an attractive public space built near the entrance and the old chapel developed into a community building.
This is just what your local Conservative team wanted ASDA to do.
